Mt. Kilimanjaro - Lemosho Route.

The Lemosho Route: is an unspoilt, remote, little-used and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. It can either be used to gain the Western Breach route or followed by the Kibo South Circuit to ascend by the easier Barafu Route. The route is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other big game animals.

The route is quite long and a party wishing to ascent comfortably should take 8 days on the trip. However the campsites at Shira 1 and at Karanga Valley could be left out by a very strong party ascending via the Barafu Route making this a 6 day trip. Also it is possible to go up the Western Breach and complete the trip in 5 days - this is a very tough option. The Barafu (comfortable) variant is described below.

Programme

1. Arrive and overnight at hotel near Moshi/Arusha.
2. Drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Park Gate (2250m, 2 hours). From here a forest track requiring a 4WD vehicle leads to Lemosho Glades (2100m, 11km, 45 minutes) and a possible campsite (park fees are not paid to camp here). Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite, (2750m, 3 hours).
3. The trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. Several streams are crossed then it gains the Shira Ridge at about 3600m and drops gently down to Shira 1 camp located by a stream on the Shira Plateau (3500m, 5 hours).
4. A gentle walk across the plateau leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream (3850m, 1.5 hours). A variety of walks are available on the Plateau making this an excellent acclimatisation day.
5. Continue eastwards over moorland then a the rocky path leads amongst outcrops to the Lava Tower. We traverse below this and descend gently to the Barranco Hut and good campsites back in the moorland zone (3900m, 4 hours).
6. A short scramble to the top of the Great Barranco and then a traverse over scree and ridges to the Karanga Valley (4000m, 3 hours), beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers.
7. After climbing out of the Karanga Valley the trail ascends a ridge to the Barafu Hut, a bleak location with little vegetation at 4600m, (3 hours walking).
8. An early start for the ascent to the rim of the Kibo Crater between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers, (4 hours); the last section before the rim can sometimes be snow-covered and an ice-axe or ski stick is useful for balance. From here a further hour leads to Uhuru Peak, from where there are often fine views of Meru to the west and the jagged peak of Mawenzi to the east. After a short time on the summit you descend to the Barafu Hut for a rest and lunch before continuing on down to camp at Mweka Hut in the giant heather zone on the Mweka route. Those with energy on the summit may wish to descend to the Reutsh Crater and visit the dramatic ice pinnacles of the Eastern Icefields.
9. A 3-4 hour descent through beautiful forest brings you to the Park gate and your waiting transport. Drive back to the hotel near Moshi/ Arusha..
10. Leave hotel after breakfast.

Variation: Lemosho Route then Uhuru Point by the Arrow Glacier
This is a really steep, hard but short route to the summit from Arrow Glacier Camp which is itself reached in about 4 hours from the Barranco Hut. From December to February crampons and ice axes may be needed.
Cost and details on request.

Accommodation on the mountain is in tents; you will need a sleeping bag and sleeping mat. The porters will pitch the tents for you.

This is a strenuous walking trip but within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas. Ski sticks or ice-axe are useful when ascending the scree to the summit.

This route starts an altitude of 11600ft (3500m) and should only be attempted by trekkers who are already acclimatised or know from previous experience that they can tolerate altitude. From the trailhead the trail heads east across the centre of the Shira Plateau, where it is often likely to spot big game, such as elephant and buffalo. The route then joins up with the Machame Route at Shira Camp and approaches the summit via Stella Point descending via Mweka Camp.
Mt. Kilimanjaro Rongai Route7 days & 6 nights ( 5 days on trek)
RONGAI ROUTE

This route is fast gaining in popularity and is considered to be one of the easiest routes up the mountain. It is the only route starting from the north side of the mountain at Rongai a small village close to the Kenya border. The climbing conditions are drier on the northern side of the mountain and there are spectacular sweeping views over the broad flat Maasai lands. Overnights are spent camping in tents. The summit is reached via the east side of Kibo and the descent is via the Marangu route.

DAY 1

Arrive at base hotel in time for an early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek, dinner and overnight.

DAY 2

The climb begins at the village of Nale Moru ( 1950 mts) through cultivated land before entering the pine forest. Watch out for Kilimanjaro Colobus monkeys in the tree tops with their white fringed 'capes' and tail.

DAY 3

DAY 4

DAY 5

An early start for the summit on steep heavy scree to arrive at Gilman's Point at 18640ft/5681m in time to see the sun rise. Those who want to reach the highest point in Africa can take the approximately three hour excursion to Uhuru Peak 19340/5896m passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo is surprisingly fast and after some refreshment, continue the descent to reach the final campsite at Horombo at 12000ft/3700m taking 11 to 15 hours. Overnight Horombo Camp

DAY 6

A steady descent down through the moor land to Mandara Hut and then downward through the lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu ( 1830m) taking 5 to 7 hours to be met and transferred to Mountain Inn for dinner and overnight stay. Overnight base hotel

DAY 7

MOUNT MERU

Mountain Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, at 14979ft/4566m. and is overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, its famous neighbour. Not only is it a rewarding and picturesque trek in its own right, but it is also very good acclimatization for a Kilimanjaro trek. A trek involves hiking through the forest and grassland on the mountain's lower slopes, followed by a dramatic and exhilarating ridge-walk to the summit.

The following itinerary of groups or individuals can be swiftly arranged:
Mt. Kilimanjaro Meru route 5 days & 4 nights (3 days on trek)

Day 1
Arrive at base hotel in time for an early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3
Continue to ascend steeply through the pleasant forest glades and giant heather to reach Saddle Hut at 11,713ft / 3570m. Taking 2 to 3 hours. From here it is possible to take a side trek to reach the summit of Little Meru 12,450ft / 3794m and return to Saddle Hut in about 2 hours, for overnight Saddle Hut

Day 4
An early start to reach Rhino Point and then on to the summit at 14,981ft / 4566m to see the sun rise behind Mount Kilimanjaro, before descending to Momella Gate to be met and transferred back to Mountain Inn for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5
Breakfast at base hotel. End of tour.

NB These climbing expeditions can be combined with other tailor made or wildlife safaris, white water rafting, walking safaris, beach holidays and Kenya safari packages. Please inquire with our reservations desk for details.

Walking Safaris
Day 1 Walking safari on Chyulu

Depart Nairobi around 0800, for the 3 hours drive down the Mombasa road to Kibwezi. Here we will leave the tarmac, and take a dirt road, (probably an optimistic term for it), for the 30 km to where we start walking to the caves. Sumptuous lunch is served and later in the afternoon an hours walk to the entrance of the caves. Afternoon spent exploring.
Day 2 Chyulu walking hill

Explore sections of one of the longest "Lava Tube" caves in the world - Leviathan. These caves, relatively rare worldwide, were formed when molten lava, of specific type and viscosity flowed down a slope of a specific angle. The surface layer cooled and solidified, but the lower part, still molten, continued to flow on down. At this point, somewhere up the hillside a collapse of the surface crust occurred through which air enters, and so a tube evacuated itself just below the surface. Afternoon and the evening spent down in the caves looking at some of the fascinating formations found therein - Sink holes, lava ropes, stalagmites and stalactites, benches and of course the secondary, water formed features.
Day 3 Safari walking on chyulu

Early morning departure by road for the top of the Chyulu Hills after breakfast. Superb walking country with gently undulating grasslands, interspersed with dense patches of forest. Possibility of viewing herds of eland and other antelope, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest with slightly lesser chance to see elephant, lion and buffalo and the other game that live in the area. Probable views of Kilimanjaro just 50 km away. Night will be spent along the crest. Probably cool and windy with low cloud in the early morning. (Therefore warm sleeping bag comes in handy).
Day 4 Chyulu Hills safari walk

Full day of guided walks with our experienced English speaking guide. All meals and overnight back at the camp.
Day 5 Walking safari on chyulu hills

Early morning game drive or short walk before a late breakfast / early lunch. It's then along the crest road and down the western side of the hills for the drive back to Nairobi arriving before nightfall.

We have various options of an extra day on the itinerary or less depending on the groups travelling.

Itinerary may be varied from 3 - 7 or more days and is often combined with a visit to Tsavo / Amboseli National Parks .
Your itinerary 5days Chogoria Out Chogoria Mt. Kenya climbing

(Activities:Hiking and trekking,Fauna and flora, wildlife and birds watching, photography)
This itinerary is for the ascent of Pt Lenana, the third peak of Mt Kenya, at an altitude of 4985 metres. This is not a technical climb, but a hike. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness should be more than capable of completing the trek provided they approach it in a sensible manner. The ascent is via the Chogoria Route, on the little used east side of the mountain.
Day 1 Mt. Kenya climbing

Pick up from hotel at about 0800. It's then about 3 1/2 hours from Nairobi to where we collect the porters and guides (as required). Into the Mt. Kenya forest for the 22 km drive to the Park Gate at 2,850m. Dependent on road conditions, these 22 km have been known to take all afternoon to do and in really wet conditions it is possible that the top four or five km may be impassable. Night, dependent on clients wishes, at the Meru Mt. Kenya Banda's or at roadhead a further 7 km from the Park Gate.

After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace . A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithunguni and the Giants BilliardsTable, whilst if we follow the river near roadhead, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch by the stream banks then it's time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more "touristy" areas.
Day 3 Mt. Kenya climbing expedition

From our campsite, we continue to move up through the moorland zone. As this area of the mountain is still off the beaten track, there are no paths to follow, and on each trip we vary the area we walk across. After about an hour, traverse left and join a ridge (slight path to follow) and join the normal Chogoria route to Minto's Hut after about 4 hour walking. Lunch at a small stream crossing then 45 min on to a camp near Minto's Hut and next to one of the tarns. Very short afternoon walk over to superb views across to "The Temple" and down to Lake Michaelson.

Whitewate Rafting

GENERAL INFORMATION

White water rafting Safaris pioneered White-water rafting in Kenya back in early 1991 when Mark Savage and 4 friends decided, despite never having set foot in a rubber boat before, to "have a go" at running an 80 km section of the Athi River. Three of the participants thought it to be the most exciting thing they'd done in years, and decided that it was an activity that should be introduced on to the Kenya tourist list of options and excursions available. As an indication to rafting's ever increasing popularity, we have had as many people on the rivers with us this year, as during all of the first five years combined. 1996 looks to be continuing the trend.

white water rafting

To date we are still the only outfitter on the rivers, and our river expert, Mark Savage, has been on the first descent of every river so far rafted in Kenya. In this activity one of our largest clients is the British Army, for whom we do the "Adventure Training" for their men whilst they are over in Kenya on general exercise.

Come and join us on one of the rivers described. We'll give you an experience that you will remember for many years to come, for on no other rivers in the world will you find the diversity of experiences that we offer: The spectacular scenery of Kenya and the multitude of bird and animal life, which, combined with the excitement of White-water Rafting, makes for a totally unique safari.

Alternatively we can customise a river experience to fit your request; be it a serene and scenic float trip along a picturesque waterway, or an adrenaline surging ride down a different wild and raging White-water River. We can even offer experienced rafters the opportunity to attempt, with us, a first descent of a virgin river. (Limited availability).
The Rivers that we most frequently run
Tana River

Due to the high quality of the white-water sections, the prolific bird life and the natural beauty of the whole area, along with its ease of access from Nairobi (just 95 km), this is our most popular river for both the white-water trips and scenic float trips. The white-water section that we do starts some 2½ km above the town of Sagana, and ends at our own campsite some 16 km down stream. The scenic float trip starts from the campsite and takes in 12 km of calm water down to the barrage close to the main road back to Nairobi.
The Mathoya River

Because of the serious nature of this river, we will only make it available to those who have rafted with us before or who have experience on a class V river. 500m of descent over 30 km of river, almost all continuous class III and IV white-water with a dozen or more sections of class V. Low volume and highly technical.
The Athi River

Distance from Nairobi is about 230 km, and hence only viable as a minimum of a three day trip. The description attached covers the more usual 80 km section that we do, but it is possible to start from near the town of Thika and to finally end the trip on the Indian Ocean near Malindi some 500 km on down. Several short portages required. Best described as a scenic river but with perhaps a third of the river being class II and III. Three sections of class IV / V.
The Ewaso-Ng'iro River

Best done as a 4 day expedition from Nairobi though sometimes as just 3 days. This river combines the best of class IV white-water with superb scenery and wildlife viewing. Unfortunately, because of extensive cultivation within the primary catchment area, water level reliability is poor and hence we can seldom confirm a departure much more than a week or so in advance.
Other Rivers

Some still not run for their full length. Upper section of the Tana - Very serious with several kilometres of portage required. Lower section into Meru National Park - Scenic only. Nzoia and Yala - reasonable water but the area is heavily populated. Chania, Thiba, and several others look good from the air and are awaiting exploration.
Specialised training and courses
We do part of the "Adventure Training" for men of the British Army and Royal Navy.
We teach the potential river enthusiast all the river skills necessary for him to run his own rafting adventure, or sufficiently qualified to assist our own full time guides on the river. We teach you how to "read" the river, and to find a safe route through major rapids. We teach oarsmanship and how to command a paddle raft. River rescue, equipment rigging and knot tying. River-orientated first aid. Environmentally sensitive camping procedures and much more.

12 DAYS LUXURY CAMPING PACKAGE

Nairobi-Samburu-Nakuru-Ark-Masai Mara-Sweetwaters-Mt. Kenya-Nairobi Jkia
Day 01 Nairobi/Masai Mara

Pick from your Nairobi hotel. 9.30A.M. Depart for Masai Mara Game Reserve via the viewpoint of the Great Rift Valley, lunch enroute. Arrive in time for an evening game drive in this pristine, unequalled 'big game country'. Dinner and overnight at the Mara Sarova camp.
Day 02 Masai Mara

This will be a day of tracking game with your guide, after an early breakfast. The Mara's landscape is scenic savannah grassland on rolling hills, which enables the reserve to attract sufficient rainfall to maintain and support a large population of herbivores, together with the predators that follow. Elephant, lion, buffalo can be seen with relative ease though luck is a necessary factor for spotting rhino and leopard that complete the big five as the two animals are very timid and sparsely numbered. Plains game like wildebeest, zebra and Masai giraffe abound as well as hippos and a wide variety of antelopes including impala, dik dik, hartebeest, Grant's gazelle and Thompson's gazelle among others. We will cater for a picnic lunch at the hippo pool. In the evening, return to the Mara Sarova Camp dinner and overnight stay.
Day 03 Masai Mara/Nakuru

After breakfast, leave Masai Mara for Nakuru National Park with a stop for lunch enroute, with scenic views of Lake Naivasha and Mt. Longonot, which are in the Great Rift from afar on the main highway. Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for it's enormous population of pink flamingos. Dinner and overnight at the Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Day 04 Lake Nakuru/Samburu

After breakfast a morning game drive will follow in Lake Nakuru National Park, the abode of various water birds that breed in the lake's salty water including flamingos, white pelicans and marabou stork; white rhino may be seen as well as the rare Rothschild's giraffe, cape buffalo and other plains game in this park that is 188 square kilometres. Depart for Samburu Game Reserve for dinner and overnight at the Samburu Larsen's Camp/ Lodge via the Thompson Falls, which are named after Joseph Thompson, one of the first European explorers who walked from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the 1880's. Lunch and game drive enroute.
Day 05 Samburu

Morning and afternoon game-viewing sessions tracking the rare, drought resistant animals species which can only be seen north of the equator; these are: the reticulated giraffe, grevy's zebra, the gerenuk or giraffe-gazelle, Beisa Oryx and the blue shanked Somali ostrich. The Ewaso Nyiro River traverses this park, it's source being the Aberdare ranges. There are therefore very high chances of spotting crocodile in a natural environment though its water level varies seasonally. You will have a lunch and leisure break in the mid afternoon. Rest of meals and overnight at the Larsen's Camp/Samburu Lodge.
Day 06 Samburu/Mt. Kenya

After breakfast, another game drive in Samburu before departing for Mt. Kenya to arrive for late lunch. Afternoon at leisure and a walk to the Mau Mau caves. Organize gear for the trip and begin the acclimatization process as the town is at the foothills of Mt. Kenya, at altitude of 1950m. Dinner and overnight at the Naro Moro River Lodge.
Day 07 Mt. Kenya/Old Moses

After breakfast, drive to Sirimon Park gate, 2,660m above sea level. Begin your 3 hours walk to Old Moses hut in average hiking time of 3 hrs. Dinner and overnight in the hut.
Day 08 Old Moses/Shiptons

After breakfast hike to Shiptons in an average hiking time of 5-7hrs which depends directly on one's level of physical fitness. Lunch will be taken en-route. The altitude here is 4200m above sea level; dinner and overnight in the hut.
Day 09 Shiptons/Pt. Lenana/Meru

You will wake up to a pre-dawn attempt of Point Lenana, altitude 4985m. After your photography and viewing session descend to Minto's hut on the Chogoria trail for a full breakfast and then down to Meru for dinner and overnight in tents.
